Wisconsin's Registered Agent Rules, Minus the Legalese

Wisconsin registered agent service at a flat $99 per year. Physical address, scanned legal mail, compliance alerts. Renewals stay the same price.

Wisconsin cityscape

Every entity on file with Wisconsin's Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) needs a registered agent, no exceptions and no lapses. The rulebook for LLCs is Wis. Stat. § 183.0115. Here is what it demands, in plain language, and how we cover it for $99/year.

The Job Itself

Your registered agent is where the legal system finds your business. Lawsuit? The summons goes to the agent. Annual report notice from the DFI? Same address. The agent has to be there during business hours, take the document, and get it to you fast enough that you can actually respond.

Sounds simple. The catch is that the role is public, continuous, and unforgiving when it fails. A missed summons can turn into a default judgment before you even know a case exists.

What § 183.0115 Requires

A qualifying person or company. Either a natural person living in Wisconsin whose business office matches the registered office, or an entity (domestic, or foreign and authorized in Wisconsin) with a business office at that same address.

A real address. The statute insists on an actual physical location with a street address, expressly excluding anything that is solely "a post office box, mailbox service, or telephone answering service."

Matching offices. The agent's business office and the registered office must be identical. Not nearby. Identical.

An email on file. Section 183.0115(2) adds that the agent must have an email address and an actual place of business or activity in Wisconsin.

Consent. Nobody becomes your agent by surprise; the appointee has to agree to serve.

Your LLC cannot be its own registered agent. This is not an interpretation; the DFI's own paperwork says so, with Form 502 and Form 13 each carrying the printed line that the entity may not name itself as its own registered agent. A human owner who meets the residency and office-match rules can serve personally, but the company as a company cannot.

Being Your Own Agent: The Fine Print

Wisconsin lets a qualifying individual take the role, and here is what you sign up for. Your address lands in the DFI's public database where anyone, including lead-generation scrapers, can pull it. You commit to being physically at that address through business hours, every business day, indefinitely. And service of process gets handed to whoever answers your door, which is a memorable experience when clients are in the room.

What You Get With Us Instead

A private address. Our Wisconsin street address goes on your filings. Yours stays out of the database.

Coverage that does not blink. Staffed registered office, all business hours, every business day.

Same-day delivery. Documents are scanned and emailed the day they arrive, then saved to your digital vault.

Deadline alerts. Your annual report is due by the end of your LLC's anniversary quarter, $25 filed online. We track the date and nudge you ahead of it.

A stable address. Change offices or leave the state; the registered office stays the same and no update filing is needed.
